Yoga

Restore and Rejuvenate the mind and body and come home to who you truly are.

"Yoga is the journey of the Self, through the Self, to the Self" (Bhagavad Gita)

"Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind" (Yoga Sutras of Patanjali)

What is Yoga?

The word Yoga stems from the Sanskrit word Yuj, which means "to unite". It is a practice that dates back 2,500- 3,000  years, potentially more, and has developed and evolved over time. At its core it is exactly about what it says on the tin - ''Union". Union of the Body, Mind, Spirit. Moving from a place of dis-ease to ease, from heaviness to lightness, from darkness to light. In essence it is about love, oneness and peace. Not because we no longer experience challenge - the practice itself presents challenge, but because we respond to it from a different perspective and awareness.

As I mentioned there has been lot of evolution that has taken place throughout the recorded history of Yoga but two teachings that I would say are worth having an understanding of are the following: 'The Chariot Analogy' found in the 'Katha Upanishad' and 'The 8 Limbs of Yoga' found in 'The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali'. They provide insight into the aspects and arrangement that make up the practice and the experience of Yoga.

Yogic practices and philosophy can have a great impact on our overall-well being, reducing chronic stress and improving resiliency to stress. As well as this it can help us to process emotions. In my experience practicing Yoga in conjunction with resistance training and cardiovascular training offers a great balance for health and longevity.

The Chariot Analogy for Yoga

The chariot analogy in yoga—originating from the Katha Upanishad and expanded in the Bhagavad Gita—compares human life to a chariot journey. The true Self (Atman) is the master, the body is the chariot, the intellect is the driver, the mind is the reins, and the senses are the wild horses.

The eight limbs of yoga, or Ashtanga yoga from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, are a sequential path toward personal growth, self-awareness, and spiritual realization.
